Patrick O'Connor

High-impact presentations that challenge assumptions and reframe mental health thinking. Incorporating many informative, uplifting and engaging personal experiences and informative medical insights.
Advisory work that is focused on identifying why certain gaps persist and how they can be addressed in structured, practical ways. Solutions that are implementable and impactful.
Experience-informed, evidence-aware learning covering: Breakthrough treatment strategies, system blind spots, medication frameworks, recovery pathways, emerging global approaches.
Patrick O’Connor brings a combination of insight, experience, and perspective that is extraordinarily rare.
Few people have operated at senior executive levels inside complex corporate systems, then later navigated severe mental illness, global treatment pathways, and the disability claims system firsthand — and emerged with both meaningful recovery and the ability to articulate what genuinely improves outcomes.
Patrick’s career began at the client-facing end of the life insurance system, advising individuals, families and business owners on risk, protection, disability insurance and claim-time outcomes.
This experience gave him a practical understanding of how clients think about insurance before illness occurs, what they expect when a claim arises, and how advisers carry the responsibility of explaining complex products during highly vulnerable periods.
Patrick’s executive experience inside life insurance provides a system-level understanding of how insurers operate across distribution, product design, claims, customer care, commercial pressures, governance and organisational change.
He was part of the executive leadership team that helped transform a boutique life insurance organisation into one of Australia’s largest life insurers. His experience spans large-scale business transformation, global research, system design, change implementation, brand development and sales growth.

Patrick has first-hand experience navigating severe mental illness and a wide range of treatments, therapies, medical pathways and recovery strategies.
This provides a rare real-world perspective on what treatment actually looks like from the patient’s side — including confusion, trial and error, access barriers, communication breakdowns, treatment fatigue, financial cost, hope, relapse, recovery and the challenge of staying engaged.

Patrick’s recovery journey expanded into extensive research into mental health systems, emerging treatments, clinical approaches, recovery models and international developments.
His research spans Australian and overseas perspectives, including treatment innovation, system gaps, patient experience, diagnosis, disability, insurance claims and the broader policy environment affecting people with mental illness.

Patrick’s lived experience, recovery journey and research have developed into a broader advocacy role focused on improving mental health awareness, treatment access, system accountability and outcomes for people experiencing mental illness.
His advocacy is grounded in the belief that people with lived experience can identify gaps that are often invisible to those designing systems from the outside.
Lived. Learned. Shared. is a mental health consultancy unlike any other.
Founded by Patrick O’Connor, Lived. Learned. Shared. transforms personal experience of complex mental health treatment into practical, evidence-informed presentations, workshops, and consultancy services.
It combines first-hand lived experience from inside the system, real-world engagement with breakthrough and emerging treatments, deep understanding of existing care models, and executive-level corporate strategy.
This is not theoretical analysis.
It is insight shaped by direct experience, rigorous research, and measurable recovery.
We bring:
We partner with individuals, organisations, leadership teams, and community groups to embed lived experience into strategy, systems, education, governance, and culture.
Not as symbolic inclusion.
Not as storytelling theatre.
But as structured, experience-informed advisory that strengthens clinical expertise, improves system performance, and delivers implementable change.
Mental health systems often speak about people.
We can help so that they speak with them.

We also provide strategic guidance to individuals seeking information to discuss with their treating physicians. This does not constitute medical advice.
This keynote is an exciting, funny, confronting and deeply informative roller-coaster through one man’s global search for survival done differently.
Patrick O’Connor takes the audience from elite hospitals and specialist clinics in the United States, working with world-class doctors treating the most complex mental health cases, through to the raw, unexpected and sometimes absurd realities of trying new treatments — including psychedelic therapy in a tent in the Victorian forests.
It is a story of refusing to accept the system’s limits, chasing answers across the world, finding humour in the madness, and fighting for a recovery almost no one believed could happen.
This is not a standard mental health talk. It is a story of resilience, rebellion, innovation and winning — a recovery journey rarely achieved and almost never told.
